First Aid one-day course
The course duration is one day. The aim of this course is to preserve life, prevent further harm, relieve pain and suffering and to deliver a live patient ashore. The assumed level of knowledge before starting this course is nil.
Learn your ABC
A = Airway - open airway if closed by gently tilting the patient's head backwards.
B = Breathing - check that the patient is breathing.
C = Circulation - check for circulation. Listen for heart beat, check pulse at wrists or neck.
The Recovery position
Learn the impotence of the recovery position. An unconscious person can die, not of their injuries, but by inhaling the contents of their stomach, unless they are put in the recovery position.
This course takes a full 8 hour day and involves practicing the recovery position, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, CPR, bandaging wounds and a great emphasis is paid to the effects of hypothermia, emersion and drowning. There is no examination - the lecturer will assess the students over the day and award a certificate to those that have assimilated the course content. The certificate is valid for 3 years and then you have renew your qualification - make sure yours is up to date!!
